Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point 'Times New Roman' font; includes line numbers; and has a 2.5cm margin on all sides.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Please read our Author Guidelines, as well as this page, to ensure your article meets all journal requirements prior to submission.

Submission types/ sources

For further guidance on each submission type refer to AMSJ: http://www.amsj.org/submission/submission-types

Submission types accepted are original research articles, review articles, case reports, features (conference reports, elective reports, essays), book reviews, and letters/news.

Submissions could potentially arise from the following sources:

  • Research projects.
  • Submissions prepared especially for AJGH.
  • Assignments (must be exceptional examples with a self-negotiated topic).
  • Papers prepared for various competitions.

For submissions arising from a marked university project or assignment, marker comments should be provided in the relevant field in the submission form.

Ready to submit?

Title your submission document (*.doc or *.docx format) according to submission type and the first five words of the title, using the following format:

  • Submission Type. Title (first five words)
  • e.g. Review article. Surgery for spinal cord injury.

Title your figures in the same manner, but with the figure number added at the end:

  • Submission Type. Title (first five words). Figure Number.
  • e.g. “Review article. Surgery for spinal cord injury. Figure 4.

Do not include any tables, figures, or images in the main text file of your manuscript. Please include all tables, figures, and images in another separate Word format document. Include these in the order they are referred to in the manuscript, with one table, figure, or image per page with its appropriate caption and number. Captions must contain sufficient information to render their associated item intelligible without reference to the text of a submission.

Additionally, please also include as attachments in your submission email the individual files of each of your images and figures (not tables), without their captions. This includes any diagrams or figures created using Microsoft Word, which should subsequently be converted to a vector or bitmap format and attached as described.

You may submit via the link above, or email your submission document and all figures as separate attachments to ajgh@amsa.org.au. Alternatively, you may directly email an associate editor who you have been in contact with. As the subject, use the title of the submission document, i.e. “Submission Type. Title (first five words).

The editorial team will then be in contact with you regarding acceptance of your submission and for any further revisions required.

Submission Selection

Submissions will be screened and short-listed by the editorial team to ensure that they meet submission criteria and standard. Successful academic submissions (original research articles, case reports and review articles) may proceed through an anonymous external peer-review process.

If revisions are required, authors will be contacted, and given a specific window of time in which to return a revised submission. It is the author’s responsibility to cooperate fully and promptly with any request of the editorial staff during this time. Proceeding to the author revision stage is NOT a guarantee of eventual publication. Following the revision stage, final article selection will be made by editorial staff.

AJGH defines authorship as per the criteria recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which includes:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  • Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All those identified as authors should meet this criteria, and all those who meet this criteria should be identified as authors. Authors should be able to identify which co-authors are responsible for specific parts of the work.

As a guideline, supervisors are generally identified as the senior (last) author of a manuscript, with the primary author being listed first. AJGH accepts co-first authorships in the event multiple authors contributed equally to the work.

The original owner/author will retain copyright over all articles submitted to AJGH. This permits authors to reproduce their contribution, in whole or in part, in any printed text for which they are an author.

Authors published in AJGH are free to submit to other journals that accept previously published work. However, authors should realise that they may not be able to submit their published work to other journals that only accept original work not previously published elsewhere.

AJGH is an open access journal and believes in the free flow of information. Articles may be republished online or in print for free, as long as AJGH is given credit, a link is provided, and the material is not edited or sold separately.

Basic Formatting Requirements

Submissions should meet the following basic formatting requirements:

  • Typed in English.
  • A4 document.
  • Single-spaced.
  • Margins of 2.5cm on all sides.
  • 12-point sized font.
  • ‘Times New Roman’ font.
  • Microsoft Word 97-2003 (*.doc) format.
  • No indentation for new paragraphs, rather leave a blank line.
  • At the beginning of the document (not on a separate title page), please list the following:
    • Submission type.
    • Submission title.
  • To assist reviewers, Word processing line numbers must be included as part of the submission and the manuscript must include new line numbers after every page. This can be done by selecting line numbers in the Page Layout tab of Microsoft Word.

AJGH conforms to the Vancouver style of referencing.

Vancouver is a numbered style, where the references are listed at the end of a manuscript in the order in which they first appear. In-text citations should be in the form of numbers within square brackets, for example “[14]“.

For an overview of the Vancouver style, refer to the following document from the University of Queensland:

For an exhaustive guide to the Vancouver style, refer to the NLM’s Citing Medicine:

References are not included in the word count of a submission.

Tables should be included in the submission document itself (at appropriate locations in the body of the text). They should be constructed as simply as possible. Large tables that cause formatting issues will be sent back to the author for revision or discarded. Information in tables should not be duplicated in the text, and tables should be relevant and necessary.

Tables should be labelled by number, with an appropriate caption. Captions must contain sufficient information to render tables intelligible without reference to the text of a submission.

Figures and Images

Figures must be completely original, unless permission has been sought for their use from the original source. If such permission has been granted, please attach a copy of the relevant correspondence as a separate file.

They should be constructed as simply as possible, directly relevant to the submission, and aesthetically sound. Figures should be labelled by number, with an appropriate caption. Captions must contain sufficient information to render figures intelligible without reference to the text of a submission.

Figures must be provided in a vector format where possible, or alternatively in high-resolution ‘*.jpeg’ or ‘*.png’ formats. Different formats may be sought at a later stage if the submissions proceeds to publication. They should be attached as separate files as outlined on the ‘Submit‘ page. Only the captions should be included in the submission document itself (at appropriate locations in the body of the text).

Where relevant, authors should provide acknowledgement of contributions that do not justify authorship, technical help, financial and material support in an acknowledgements section of their submission document. This should follow at the end of the body text of the article.

Ethical and Academic Standards

Authors are responsible for ensuring that any research related to submissions was conducted according to rigorous academic and ethical standards, and patient consent was obtained where relevant.

We refer authors to the ICMJE guidelines: http://www.icmje.org/.

Details of ethics approvals must be provided in the submission form where relevant.

Conflicts of Interest

Authors are responsible for ensuring that they have avoided, or at least declared, any significant conflicts of interest associated with submissions.

We refer authors to the ICMJE guidelines regarding conflicts of interest:http://www.icmje.org/ethical_4conflicts.html.

A conflict of interest declaration must be included in the submission, containing either “none declared” or details of any conflicts of interest. There is also a conflict of interest section in the submission form.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that submissions are neither intentionally nor able to be construed as defamatory or unfairly derogatory of any persons or organisations.

Upon submission of a manuscript to AJGH, the author attests to the following;

  • The work is their own, with no part of the manuscript plagiarised from other sources.
  • Proper referencing is provided for all sources used to inform their work.
  • All manuscripts will be reviewed by a plagiarism detection software.
  • Strong action will be taken against plagiarism cases.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that permissions were obtained from any supervisors or co-authors for submission to AJGH.
